Spring Shield: 3 Teas to Protect Your Throat from Fine Dust

Hello, everyone. This is Beatrice_JiEun.

Can you believe it is already March? Here, the air is starting to feel warmer, signaling the arrival of spring. However, along with the blooming flowers come unwelcome guests: Yellow Dust (Asian Dust) and Fine Dust.

I have shared stories about 23 different types of tea on this blog so far, but today’s selection is special. Just as we hedge our portfolios against market volatility, we need to hedge our health against the changing seasons.

Today, I want to introduce three traditional Korean teas that act as a "shield" for your throat and lungs during this dusty season.

1. Bellflower Root Tea (Doraji-cha): The Respiratory Guardian

If your throat feels scratchy or dry, this is your first line of defense.

  • Why it helps: Bellflower roots are rich in saponin, a component known to strengthen the lining of the throat and lungs. It is excellent for suppressing coughs and clearing phlegm.

  • Tasting Note: It has a slightly bitter, earthy taste. I recommend adding a spoonful of honey to balance the bitterness and add a soothing effect.

2. Quince Tea (Mogwa-cha): The Vitamin C Bomb

When the large daily temperature range leaves you feeling fatigued, reach for Quince tea.

  • Why it helps: Known as the "ugly fruit with a beautiful scent," Quince is packed with Vitamin C and citric acid. It not only protects the throat but also helps relax stiff muscles and relieves fatigue.

  • Tasting Note: It has a sweet and sour flavor with a deeply aromatic fragrance that instantly lifts your mood.

3. Omija Tea (Schisandra Berry): The Detoxifier

Omija means "five flavors" in Korean (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and pungent). It is a powerhouse for lung health.

  • Why it helps: In traditional medicine, Omija is known to strengthen the lungs and heart. It aids in detoxification, helping the body flush out heavy metals and fine dust particles. Plus, it creates saliva, keeping your dry mouth and throat hydrated.

  • Tasting Note: The tartness is the dominant flavor, which really wakes up your senses. It is delicious served warm, but also refreshing as an iced tea on a warm afternoon.

Closing

Investing isn't just about stocks; the most important asset you manage is your health. A clear mind comes from a healthy body, and a warm cup of tea is the simplest way to take care of yourself.

As the yellow dust season begins, I hope you try one of these teas to keep your breathing easy and your spirits high.

Stay healthy and drink warm.

Sincerely,Beatrice_JiEun.
